This course allows kaiako pitomata to develop their knowledge of Te Reo, tīkanga and mātauranga Māori. We acknowledge that everyone is on a journey with learning te Te Reo Māori and at varying levels of ability and confidence. Our modules are designed to cover the first three levels of the Te Reo Māori curriculum and our teaching team support kaiako pitomata to develop their skills of whakarongo (listening), pānui (reading), korero (speaking) and tuhituhi (writing). The three broad areas that the course modules cover are: Whānau, Whenua and Akomanga.

 

Whānau: to greet, farewell and acknowledge people and respond appropriately to acknowledgements; communicate personal information, such as name, parents’ and grandparents’ names’, iwi, hapū; communicate about relationships between people.

 

Whenua: communicate about links to mountain, river, home town and place of family origin; communicate about location, communicate about likes/dislikes, time, weather, and seasons.

 

Akomanga: communicate about number, using days of the week, months, and dates; understand use simple politeness conventions; use and respond to simple learning environment language; communicate about possessions, physical characteristics, personality, and feelings; compare and contrast habits, routines, and customs; give and follow directions; communicate about immediate past activities.

 

Kaiako pitomata have the opportunity to receive digital badges as part of the aromatawai process that is structured within the course and celebrate their growth and development in Te Reo Māori.

 

The teaching team for the programme come with an outstanding background of qualifications, skills, experience and roles including: PhD and EdD in education; MEd; BSc Psychology; BEd; BTchgLrng; PGDip Bilingual Teaching; PGDip Language Acquisition Theory; PGDip Health Science in Māori Health; Diploma of Teaching; Heke Whare Tapere Diploma in Literary Performing Arts; Associate Dean Māori (CoHSS); Kaihautū Māori (IoE); Associate Professor; GradDipLngTchg programme co-lead; Tumuaki/Principal; Senior Lecturer; Wharekura graduate; Senior Tutor; and Kaiārahi Tiriti. The teaching and learning approaches that the team draw from include a range of reo methodologies where language learning and production is contextualised. We use a range of second language acquisition pedagogical approaches to engage kaiako pitomata in developing their own communicative skills in Te Reo Māori with a view that this will arm them with a firm foundation from which to develop the skills of our tamariki mokopuna in a range of educational contexts across Aotearoa. The team also acknowledge our whakapapa connections to Ngāti Porou, Te Atiawa, Te Whānau-Ā-Apanui, Whakatōhea, Ngāti Manawa and the varying iwi who have supported us on our journeys in Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga including Ngāti Toa and Ngāti Raukawa.
